Psalm 99 The Psalter Psalm 101

PSALMVS C

Iubilate Deo

A Psalm of Thanksgiving · Thanksgiving · Book IV

Pray this Psalm · Lectio Divina

1A psalm of praise.

2Sing joyfully to God, all the earth: serve ye the Lord with gladness. Come in before his presence with exceeding great joy.

3Know ye that the Lord he is God: he made us, and not we ourselves. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

4Go ye into his gates with praise, into his courts with hymns: and give glory to him. Praise ye his name:

5for the Lord is sweet, his mercy endureth for ever, and his truth to generation and generation.

Wisdom of the Church

Psalm 100, designated in the Hebrew Bible as Psalm 100 but often numbered as Psalm 99 in the Septuagint and Vulgate, bears the superscription 'A Psalm for the thank-offering.' While not explicitly attributed to David in the Masoretic text, it is situated within the collection of the 'Enthronement Psalms' (93-100), which celebrate Yahweh’s kingship over all nations. Historically, scholars associate this text with the post-exilic period of the Second Temple, serving as a processional hymn for pilgrims entering the sanctuary to present the Todah, or thanksgiving sacrifice. Its position at the conclusion of this thematic grouping serves as a culmination of the liturgical movement toward Zion. The psalm reflects a universalistic vision, inviting 'all the earth' to acknowledge the covenantal fidelity of the God of Israel. In the context of Second Temple worship, it likely functioned as an entry liturgy, where the faithful, purified and prepared, acknowledged their status as the 'people of his pasture' before entering the inner courts to offer praise and sacrifice.
