Psalm 109 The Psalter Psalm 111

PSALMVS CX

Dixit Dominus

The Messianic King · Messianic · Book V

Pray this Psalm · Lectio Divina

1The Lord said to my Lord: Sit thou at my right hand: Until I make thy enemies thy footstool.

2The Lord will send forth the sceptre of thy power out of Sion: rule thou in the midst of thy enemies.

3With thee is the principality in the day of thy strength: in the brightness of the saints: from the womb before the day star I begot thee.

4The Lord hath sworn, and he will not repent: Thou art a priest for ever according to the order of Melchisedech.

5The Lord at thy right hand hath broken kings in the day of his wrath.

6He shall judge among nations, he shall fill ruins: he shall crush the heads in the land of the many.

7He shall drink of the torrent in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.

Wisdom of the Church

Psalm 110, superscribed 'A Psalm of David', holds a unique position as the most frequently cited psalm in the New Testament. Historically, scholars debate whether it originated as a royal enthronement hymn or a liturgical oracle during the Davidic monarchy. While traditional attribution identifies David as the author—a view supported by Christ’s own argument in the Gospels—modern critical approaches often suggest a provenance within the royal court of Jerusalem, likely utilized for the coronation of a king who served as the Lord’s anointed regent. Structurally, it resides in Book V of the Psalter, a collection often associated with the post-exilic return and the restoration of temple worship. By the Second Temple period, the psalm had evolved from a royal court document into a messianic oracle, reflecting the anticipation of an eternal priest-king. Its themes of divine victory and hereditary priesthood echo throughout the Hallel collections, grounding Israel’s hope in the permanence of the Davidic covenant and God’s promise to establish a throne that would endure forever, surpassing the ephemeral power of terrestrial empires.
