Wisdom of the Church

Psalm 119, the longest in the Psalter, is an acrostic poem structured around the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. While later tradition often associated the entire Psalter with David, modern scholarship—and the internal evidence of its highly developed, post-exilic linguistic character—suggests it likely emerged during the Second Temple period. It functions as a sapiential masterpiece, serving as the capstone of the 'Torah psalms' that frame the Book of Psalms. Lacking a specific historical superscription, it reflects the concerns of a community seeking to maintain covenant fidelity amidst the trials of the Persian or Hellenistic eras. In the context of the Second Temple, it served as a profound liturgical meditation, functioning as a didactic manual for the faithful to internalize the Law (Torah) not merely as a legal code, but as a source of life and divine communion. By systematically progressing through the alphabet, it demonstrates that every facet of human experience—from aleph to taw—must be brought into conformity with the revealed will of God, framing the entirety of life under the authority of the Word.
